Gravity picks up seven Oscars

Matthew McConaughey, Cate Blanchett, Lupita Nyong'o and Jared Leto

Space drama Gravity swept the board at the 2014 Oscars, picking up seven awards but the film missed out in the Best Film category to historical drama 12 Years A Slave.

Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron because the first Latin American to win the Best Director award, adding to the film six other awards for technical achievement, including Best Special Effects.

Cate Blanchett was named Best Actress for her portrayal of the heroine in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine.

Matthew McConaughey won the Best Actor Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club.

It is the second consecutive year the Best Director and Best Picture prize have been awarded to different films.

Cuaron praised the "transformative" power of film and singled out the film's star Sandra Bullock as "the soul, the heart of Gravity".

Meanwhile ceremony host Ellen DeGeneres brought the selfie to the Academy Awards and broke Twitter records.

Oscars selfieEllen's photograph during the ceremony - with a line-up of stars including Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Spacey, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt - went straight on to Twitter and promptly went viral and by 6am had been retweeted more than two million times.

It broke a record set by President Barack Obama with the picture of him hugging First Lady Michelle Obama after his re-election in 2012.

Twitter even had to send out an apology because all of the retweeting disrupted the service for more than 20 minutes.
