It still has some way to go before catching rival superhero movie Deadpool, however, which has now made £37.3m.
Previous Superman blockbuster Man Of Steel in 2013 opened with £11.2m box office takings while Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight opened with £11.9m takings in 2008 so the new blockbuster has more than held its own ground.
Elsewhere, Disney's new animation Zootropolis took £5.31m in its opening weekend.
Previous chart topper Kung Fu Panda 3 took in £1.72m over the Easter weekend to land in third place.
