Jena Malone is Batman's new female Robin

Jena Malone will reportedly play a female Robin in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

Ben Affleck stars as the Caped Crusader in Zack Snyder's film, which has been shooting in Detroit since the summer.

A local news station WILX-10 spoke with one of the extras at Michigan State University where a scene involving Bruce Wayne (Affleck) and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) was being filmed this week.

Speaking about the comic book movie's top secret script, reporter Kirk Montgomery revealed: "I've also learned that the character of Robin is now female."

The Hunger Games star Jena, who worked with Zack on 2011's Sucker Punch, will apparently play Carrie Kelley, who becomes Batman's sidekick Robin.

Jena has been seen on the set of the movie, but Warner Bros has refused to comment on the rumours.

Robin has appeared in various forms in the DC comic books over the years, some male, some female.

Carrie Kelley appears in Frank Miller's 1986 four issue miniseries The Dark Knight Returns.

The anonymous extra who spoke to WILX could face a fine of five million US dollars (£3.1 million) after signing a non-disclosure agreement with Warner Bros.

Ben will play Batman opposite Henry Cavill, who will reprise his role as Superman, in Zack's sequel to Man Of Steel.

Amy Adams, Diane Lane and Lawrence Fishburne will also reprise their roles, alongside newcomers Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, Tao Okamoto and Ray Fisher. Jesse Eisenberg will play Lex Luthor and Gal Gadot makes her debut as Wonder Woman.

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice is due out in March 2016.
